New Castle County Council Approves Phased In 15% Property Tax Increase

by Super User

The New Castle County Council has approved the proposed property tax increase for county residents. On Tuesday, June 12, the council approved a 15% property tax increase that will be phased in over two years with county residents receiving a 7.5% tax increase each year.

The vote was 7-5 with MOT area 6th district Councilman Bill Powers voting against and MOT area 12th district Councilman Bill Bell absent.  On May 22, the council voted against both a 15% increase proposed by County Executive Matt Meyer and a compromise 12.5% increase.

County Executive Matt Meyer praised the vote saying that the executive and council reached a compromise but Councilman Jea Street, one of the dissenting voters, said this is not a compromise since it was negotiated back up to 15% after the 12.5% compromise offered last month.
